What Car Insurance Should I Buy?
There are multiple types of car insurance policies available, each offering different levels of cover. Usually, the cost of cover increases with the level of protection offered and any associated risk.
You should consider which of the following levels of cover is appropriate for you:
- Fully Comprehensive – This is the highest level of car insurance coverage, often referred to as ‘fully comp’. With this type of policy, you are usually covered for third-party damage to another vehicle or person, as well as damage, fire or theft of your own vehicle – regardless of who is at fault. You may also be covered for damage caused by flooding.
Typically, you will not be covered for damage or injury caused by driving when under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or driving without a license.
Your insurance provider may offer extra policy features for an additional cost. These include, but are not limited to, breakdown cover, windscreen cover and car key cover.
- Third Party, Fire and Theft – This policy type covers you for theft of your vehicle or fire damage, as well as any damage you cause to other people and their property.
It’s important to note that this type of insurance policy will not cover any damage to your own car (unless it occurred as a result of fire or attempted theft). This means that you will have to pay for any car repairs directly.
- Third Party Only – This is the minimum level of cover you can legally hold if you intend to use your vehicle on UK roads. This type of policy covers the costs of damage you cause to someone else’s vehicle, as well as any injuries you may cause to a third party. There is no cover if your own car is damaged or stolen.
Regardless of the chosen policy type, your insurer may choose to limit any claims or even cancel your policy if you fail provide accurate information when the policy is purchased. It is also important to update your insurer with any information that may affect the policy during its term.
Things that may affect your policy may include claims, convictions, vehicle modifications or even keeping your vehicle at a different address from the one provided to the insurer.
