A Guide To Summer Road Safety
When the summer months approach, many of us get ready to head off on our annual summer holiday. For many people, this could be the longest journey their car goes on all year. So, it’s important to ensure that you’re appropriately prepared for summer driving!
- Make sure your car is in tip-top condition! Read our blog ‘How to take care of your car’ for further information.
- Heavy traffic – Traffic is likely to be heavier during the summer months, with more people travelling to get to their holiday destinations. We encourage you to keep a safe distance from other cars and remove any distractions, such as phones.
With more sudden and unexpected vehicle movements, you need to be alert and focused at all times.
One major point we would like to stress is that wet roads can be extremely dangerous in the summer months. Due to the glare from the Sun reflecting off wet roads, sometimes it may be difficult to see the brake lights of the vehicle in front. Additionally, it may take longer to bring a vehicle to a stop in wet conditions. - Get prepared – This brings us onto our next point. You should plan ahead for any potential traffic incidents. For example, pack plenty of fluids and snacks in case you get stuck on the road for any length of time.
It is also important that any mobile devices are charged, should you need to get in contact with family members, friends or the emergency services.
Additionally, it may be wise to use a Sat-Nav even if you are familiar with your route, as most modern Sat-Nav systems give you regular updates on traffic and road conditions. - Ensuring all fluids are topped up – You should make sure you have enough fuel for your journey, remembering that your journey may take longer due to the increased likelihood of traffic jams.
You should ensure that you have the correct level of oil in your vehicle, to reduce the likelihood of overheating and/or engine damage.
Also, cooling systems are at risk of overheating in the warmer months. It’s important that you check the coolant level regularly to avoid damage due to overheating.
Topping up your windscreen washer fluid is also vital to maintain acceptable vision whilst driving.
We encourage you to check that your vehicle is safe and road-worthy before driving any long distances. If you need any advice, feel free to give us a call!
